On March 24th, the Art Department Chair, Mr. Zagurski, held the second annual Dundalk Feeder Art Exhibit in the Dundalk High School gymnasium. Dundalk High School is the only school in the county to do this kind of exhibit, and it was the idea of Mr. Zagurski’s art supervisor.

There were approximately six hundred pieces of art, which showcased the talents of young artists from Dundalk High, Dundalk Middle, Dundalk Elementary, Holabird Middle, and Logan Elementary. Approximately six hundred people came to view these various kinds of art work.

“It was something that Dundalk did first, and will surely be copied by other schools around the county,” stated Mr. Zagurski.

“It was almost the first time my art was in an exhibit. I usually don’t show my art work. It’s very different,” London Morris, a junior art student, commented.

On a side note, I personally went to the Art Show to see a piece of my little sister Amanda’s work. As soon as I walked into the gymnasium, I noticed the massive amount of art works. There was a different type of media you could imagine from hand drawn self portraits to photographs. It was easy to see how much work and effort was put into the exhibit.

Dundalk High School is having a Hoops for Heart fundraiser on March 12th at 4:30 in the Gymnasium, but what exactly is Hoops for Heart? Hoops for Heart is an event developed by The American Heart Association in 1989 specifically by Scott Neal and Taryn Bachis to help raise money for children that have medical problems related to the heart. They originally came up with Jump Rope for Heart, but then they decided that a basketball game would make more money, hence Hoops for Heart. Five years later, in 1994, Hoops for Heart was in forty different cities, and in 1995 it went nationwide. You raise money to play in a basketball game and the money goes to The American Heart Association for researching new medicines and treatments for the children. “I have been at other schools that participated, and I have always felt like the students and faculty get a lot out of it. It’s a way for the whole school to give something back,” Mrs. Arseneau, Physical Education teacher, stated.

How can I sign up? All you need is to get a registration form from Mrs. Arsenau in the gym, fill it out and return it to her, get your envelope, and start raising money for the cause. Another way you can register is by going to http://www.americanheart.org/hoops.

The Dundalk High School activities will include: a freshmen against sophomore game, a junior against senior game, a three point shot competition for seniors, and a faculty game. “Right now we have twenty five students participating in Hoops for Heart, and I would like every student to raise at least one dollar.” Mrs. Arseneau. These events are open to the entire Dundalk community, not just Dundalk High School. You can buy a Hoops for Heart t-shirt for fifteen dollars to show your Dundalk pride.

For more information you can go to http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=2441.

The goal of all students who enter high school is to graduate, but what are the requirements for graduation in Baltimore County? Baltimore County requires a minimum of twenty one courses with a specific number of courses in each area of study: English four, Fine arts one, Mathematics three, Physical Education one, Science three, Social Studies three and a half, Technology Education one, and a completer course. The completer courses: College Completer, Career Research and Development, Child Care Services (Elementary and Pre School), Nutrition and Food Science, Teacher Academy of Maryland, Human Services Associate, Homeland Security, Carpentry, Audio Video Communications, Business Management, Finance and Accounting, and Marketing Management. Baltimore County also requires that you pass each of the High School Assessments either with passing each individual High School Assessment, the combined score of 1602, or the Bridge Plan. The last graduation requirement of Baltimore County is at least seventy five Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

Forty six of Dundalk High’s seniors have not met the SSL requirements. That means that sixty eight seniors will not graduate this June, unless they complete the required seventy five SSL hours.

How do you get you SSL hours? “There are two options to getting your SSL hours. There are courses that have SSL hours in them, so they magically show up on your report card. Another option you can use to get your SSL hours is by volunteering in the community for a non-profit organization,” Mrs. Cline, school Liberian, stated. The classes that have SSL hours already in them are ninth grade Government, Technology Education, English ten, Biology, Health, and the Child Care Completer.

If you want to find out more information about graduation requirements you can go to http://www.bcps.org/systeM/policies_rules/rules/5000Series/RULE5250.pdf.

Where do you get your weather updates? From the news on the TV? From the internet? Well if you use the internet you should try www.footsforecast.org. It’s a website created by Mr. Foot, a former Dundalk High Science teacher.

Mr. Foot is quite the meteorologist. Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processing and forecasting. In weather, there are ten types of storms: thunderstorm, tornado, hurricane, extratropical cyclones (cyclonic scale low pressure weather systems that occur in the middle latitudes of the Earth), winter storm, blizzard, ice storm, sandstorm, firestorm, and fog, and seven types of perception: drizzle, rain, snow, graupel (small hail, soft hail, or snow pellets), freezing rain, ice pellets, and hail.

The weather types and precipitation that Mr. Foot gets the most attention for is his snow related predictions. Mr. Foot is currently teaching at Crossroads and he incorporates predicting the weather into his lesson plans. Not only can you get future weather predictions, but you can get the current temperature for your area.

The teachers of Dundalk High are well aware of Mr. Foot’s website, and some even follow it. “I follow the predictions every once in a while,” stated Mrs. Paris, math teacher. “Yes, I follow Foot’s forecast,” Mrs. Evans, science teacher commented. “I follow it every once in a while. He’s usually more right than the weather men on TV,” remarked Mr. Plummer, head custodian.

“Weather is like sports, there is always room for improvement,” commented Mr. Foot.

The next time you want a weather update you might want to think about checking www.footsforecast.org.

On November 16th, Dundalk High students planted 70 daffodil buds, weeded, and re-mulched the rain garden at the Ateaze Senior Center on Holabird Avenue. The students involved were part of the group The Greening of Dundalk, which is a part of the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation (DRC). The DRC is a non-profit community based and membership organization and community development corporation that works to restore the greater Dundalk area that was established in 2001. The DRC always needs new volunteers, so either if you need service learning hours or if you just want to help out your community, you can join the DRC.

In Fall 2008 and in the Spring of 2009, the DRC gathered 200 volunteers planted over 150 trees and shrubs in Stansbury Park, at the Ateze Senior Center, Dundalk Main Street, and in the yards and sidewalks of three different neighborhoods.

Kirsten who was apart of the “Greening of Dundalk” event commented,” I enjoyed planting the trees, and I hope the bulbs were a success because of the winter coming up, but the trees were definitely a success.”

“The tree planting was a great success,” stated Mr. Hadfield, the organizer of the event.

You can find out more information on the DRC by going to www.dundalkusa.org.

The War in Iraq began on March 20th 2003 with troops from the United States and the United Kingdom. They were sent to Iraq because Iraq was suspected of possessing weapons of mass destruction (WMD), but no WMDs have been found. That same war began in March 2003 is still going on today in January 2010.

That means our troops need basic necessities that we take for granted such as protein bars, 5 Hour Energy Shots, drink mixes, water bottles, candy, snacks, socks, books, magazines, and toiletries. Troops also enjoy receiving letters.

To meet these basic necessities Mrs. Dillard in room 230 and Mrs. Cline in the Library is collecting these supplies and will be sending them the beginning of February. “The supplies are going to Brian Lawson and Jason Lang,” stated Mrs. Dillard. Any and all donations will be accepted and sent overseas.

Brain Lawson graduated from Dundalk in 2005 and Jason Lang also graduated from Dundalk, but in 2008, so the supplies will be going to previous Dundalk students that have gone on to serve our country in the biggest way.

“It gives me a chance to give back to the students that are heroes and keep us safe,” stated Mrs. Dillard.

H1N1 is a new flu that causes illness in people. H1N1 is also referred to as the swine flu because testing had been done on the genes of the H1N1, and it showed that the genes of the flu were similar to flu viruses that normally occurred in pigs, hence the nickname the swine flu. Although testing showed that the genes in the flu were similar to pigs, the genes were very different than the genes found in the flu viruses that circulate in North American pigs. H1N1 has two genes from flues that circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia, bird (avian), and human genes.

The H1N1 first affected people in the United States in April 2009. The virus spreads through person-to-person contact, like being around people with the flu that sneeze and cough. You can even become infected by touching something an infected person touched and then touching your nose, mouth, eyes, or ears.

There are multiple symptoms that allude to H1N1 are fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, chills, and fatigue. Most of these symptoms are symptoms of the regular flu, so the only way you can be sure that you have either H1N1 or the regular flu is to be tested for H1N1.

You can protect yourself from catching H1N1 is getting either the H1N1 shot or the H1N1 flu mist. You can also protect yourself from catching the regular by receiving the regular flu shot and the regular flu mist. Other day-to-day ways of preventing yourself from catching the H1N1 is wash your hands with soap and warm water often, but if soap and water is not accessible use an antibacterial hand scrub or wash and avoid touching your nose, mouth, eyes, or ears.

If you are sick with a flu-like illness the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend staying home for twenty four hours after the fever is gone, except to get medical care or other necessary items.

Students at Dundalk High have varying opinions on the H1N1. Junior, Kim Sheets, stated “I think I already had H1N1. I had a one hundred and three fever. It was bad.” Other students are not afraid of getting H1N1 at all like sophomore, Tia Belcher, that commented “I’ve been sick of many things before. The H1N1 is just another flu. I’m not worried at all.” Senior, Kaitlynn Barrett also said that “I’m not worried because I already got the shot.” With or without the shot, students at Dundalk High are not very worried about H1N1.

You can find more useful information on H1N1 or the regular flu on www.cdc.gov.

Adopt-a-Family is a program that consists of buying presents for families that can not afford to celebrate Christmas. This program was started twelve years ago by English teacher, Mrs. Dillard, along with the help of Librarian, Mrs. Cline. This year Dundalk has adopted four families.

The families’ information is supplied by social services, so we do know that the families are considered needy. Mrs. Dillard hopes to provide two outfits, two toys, and a stocking for each child in each family. “We collect toys and clothing, all must be unused and age appropriate,” Mrs. Dillard stated. All donations are appreciated. The suggested donations are gift certificates, toys, and stocking stuffers, in addition to donations of wrapping paper, gift tags, shirt boxes, and bows, so students can wrap the presents. Monetary donations can also be made to Mrs. Dillard in room 230 and Mrs. Cline in the Library. Many faculty members contribute to the program each year.

“It’s just one of those things that makes me feel good to do because I’m fortunate enough that I can do it,” stated Mrs. Dillard.
