When you think of the term Homeland Security what do you think?  Do you think of police officers? Do you think of law? Do you think of sciences? According to Criminal Justice teacher Mrs. Leonard-Reynolds, the Homeland Security completer “addresses all the Homeland security issues including law, emergency management, sciences, and ultimately Global Information Systems.”

Beginning the 2009-2010 school year, Mrs. Leonard-Reynolds also stated, “Dundalk is the only school in Baltimore County to offer the Homeland Security completer.” The school where the curriculum is being taken from is Joppatowne High School in Harford County.

Dundalk is not a magnet school, so students from the Dundalk area go to other schools such as Pataspco or Sparrows Point. The Homeland Security program was given to Dundalk “because we need to give Dundalk a special program to get students to want to come and stay here,” Mrs. Leonard-Reynolds explained.

Every magnet program has qualifications for students to be accepted into the program. According to Mrs. Leonard-Reynolds students have to be “willing to commit to the program for three years, maintain a “C” average in the program, have a good disciplinary record, and most importantly be interested in the program.”

The Homeland Security Program is geared towards students entering the tenth grade. If you are interested in taking the Homeland Security Completer starting in the 2010-2011 school year sign up for it this spring during registration. “The class is great,” stated Heather Budreski, a student that is currently in the Homeland Security program.
